How Much Exercise Should a Type 1 Diabetic Get a Day?

If you have type 1 diabetes, you should talk to your doctor before starting an exercise program. You should start slowly and always check your blood sugar levels before and after exercising. The more exercise you get, the less your blood sugar levels will spike after meals. If you are overweight, you should also talk to your doctor about losing weight. Losing weight may reduce your chances of developing hypoglycemia, so it is important to get exercise every day to keep your blood glucose levels low.

Although a doctor will likely advise you to exercise, you should not begin any new routine without first talking to an accredited exercise physiologist or your doctor. It is best to gradually increase your physical activity, aiming for 150 minutes a week. Try to find at least 20 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per day. If you find that you cannot do this, try breaking up your workout into three 10-minute sessions. It is also recommended to stretch your muscles after physical activity.

Before beginning any exercise program, check your blood sugar levels. If you have a low blood sugar level, you may need to eat a small snack containing 15 grams of carbohydrates. Small snacks like half a banana, a teaspoon of honey, or two tablespoons of raisins can help. When starting a new exercise routine, make sure to check your blood sugar levels before exercising to prevent a dangerous low blood sugar.
